Singapore Media Academy announces the results of Singapore’s First Creative Video Awards for the media industry


Singapore, 22 January 2010 – In conjunction with the opening of Singapore Media Academy’s (SMA) new training centre at Clarke Quay, Riverside Point, the newly appointed Media Continuing Education and Training (CET) centre has launched Singapore’s first ever Creative Video Awards for the industry.

The 4 winning teams were awarded the Best Picture, Best Story, Best Audio and Overall Best Video on 22 Jan 2010 during the inaugural Award Ceremony at SMA’s new training premises at Riverside Point. A Special Mention Award by the judges was also given out to acknowledge the efforts of participating teams.

31 teams of more than a hundred participants, ranging from 16 year old to 36 year old, had registered for the awards, and 27 entries was received on the closing date of 4 Jan 2010. The participating teams are expected to produce a short video of not more than 3 minutes with the theme of “Learn Media, Live Media” and the videos entries were judged according to the story, adherence to theme, creativity & originality, art direction, cinematography, editing and the use of audio & visual enhancements.

The judges for the competition are reputable practitioners from different sectors of the media industry, and they are:

  • Mdm Chua Foo Yong, Managing Director of Singapore Media Academy
  • Mr Sebastian Tan, Group Managing Director of Shooting Gallery Asia
  • Ms Ong Lay Hong, Managing Director of MediaCorp TV 12
  • Mr Jason Lai, Director of Content of Oak3Film
  • Ms Zakiah Abdul Halim, Vice President of MediaCorp Radio

“The judges are happy to see the creativity and originality demonstrated through the videos entries, and the true spirits of media were showcased in exceptionally unique manners. SMA will continue to provide platforms like the Creative Video Awards in the following years for talents and productions to be recognized regionally, and we will do our best to complement the efforts with SMA’s Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) media training to groom more talents,” said Mdm Chua Foo Yong, Chief Judge of the Creative Video Awards, and MD of Singapore Media Academy.

The winning teams received prizes in the form of cash and trophies presented by SMA. Each winning team also bagged a CI WSQ Training Award worth S$1,000, sponsored by The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA). Winners will use the Award to sign up for WSQ media-related courses at SMA to further enhance their media skills.

Upon completion of the courses, SMA is planning to co-produce video to promote media literacy together with the award recipients, and SMA aims to create more opportunities for the industry through the Creative Video Awards in the subsequent years.
